The Chancel Choir
Performance of

Thusrday, April 13, 2006

Arranged and Composed by Lloyd Laresn

Conducted by Holli White

During the Maundy Thursday service on the evening of April 13th, the Chancel Choir presented a contemporary Tenebrae service entitled The Shadow of the Cross. The Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness”) Service dates back to the 4th century and is traditionally observed during Holy Week. It focuses on the final hours of Jesus’ life and crucifixion. The Shadow of the Cross, a reminder of the magnitude of God’s love which continues through all time and eternity, will walk you through the final hours of Jesus’ life including his crucifixion. In addition to the narration of these final hours and choir anthems that enhance the narration, there were seven candles located in the worship area. These candles were extinguished one by one throughout the service, symbolizing the gradual and deepening darkness as Christ’s death becomes imminent and then final.
